Day One......

If you entered my house today, you wouldn't notice it missing. It sits there tucked in the corner between the couch and the wall, for a good part of the year. Know one really notices it.....but this morning....... its gone. "Day one" of the fire season and the "bag" is gone. The bag with the big black boots, once new, now showing signs of wear and tear, the bright yellow overalls permanently stained with ash and the shiny yellow hard hat all scuffed and battered. I'll be ok after I get "day one" over with, it's a hard day each year........I have 3 of them to get through.....

The first day............The bag is gone...it's on the ute, ready to go in a moments notice
The first day............He gets the call to go....just for a few hours
The first day............He goes away fighting for days

I get stronger each year. What he does......is a GOOD thing but BLOODY HELL....DAY ONE"S are HARD!!!

I have tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my arms as I type this. Our fire gear is all at the front door, the fire sprinklers are having a test run and half of our town has left for Melbourne for the day. Stay strong and safe. X

Oh love!! How scary for all of you! I am sending big love to you all and your family. Stay safe all of you.

(I can see a familiar friend on the couch in the pic who is REALLY good at giving and getting big squeezes.) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I don't envy you day one honey... (any of them) but you are very strong to endure them, as is he.

Thank him won't you. For all of us.

I suppose, ironically, so long as there are more Day Ones for yours, and many other families, then it means everyone came home safely.
Here's to more Day Ones

Wow! I can only imagine how hard Day One is. My Mama was rather badly wounded in a fire as a small girl. It's been a tough life for her living with the scars, literally. I TRULY admire the men and women who do what your lovely man is doing and admire you for being strong enough to let him head out and do it. Truly, I am thinking of you.

You're right, what he does is an amazing thing, putting his life at risk to save others, a real HERO... You're all in my thoughts during this fire season...

Hugs

I have the greatest admiration for all the brave people who go fighting fires. Its an amazing job that the men and women in yellow ... and their selfless families ... do.

Thinking of you Leonie. May the weather grow kind quickly.

Not only your hero but a hero in every-one's eyes, and the forgotten heroes are the ones who wait'patiently' at home for the firefighting heroes. Love Aubrey [Greedy for Colour's Mum]

I think you're both brave. Dave to go fire fighting and you to let him. Day 1 would be excruciatingly hard, all three of them. Praying for a much more sedate fire season this year...
