I adored Barbie when I was a young child. I played with her all the time.
... but would I want my children to have her? I'm not so sure. She doesn't really promote realistic body image now does she???
My son asked for Vesper Barbie the other day and I feel like I really want to get him one just because he is a boy and in time he will probably be socialised by his peers not to want one... but then I think - I don't want to promote that idea of womanhood to my son either. I'm in a bit of a bind.
What to do? What to do?

The thing I hate about barbie is that no matter how much you resist her, she will seep into your home and overtake any wooden, eco toys you have. She is a force of her own.....I tell ya...she has the power!!

Hehe. I wasn't allowed to have Barbies because they were morally bad. But my kids got them because everyoone dumped there old ones on us. In the end they fulfilled my children's desires to dress and undress things. Have you noticed that the first thing little kids do is undress their tou and carry it around naked? I personally think the Bratz dolls are a lot worse than Barbie. I don't think I would have accepted them in to my house. Cherrie

But you've got to admire her ability to keep smiling while you squish her head!!

Oh Leonie, you are SO good for my soul. I laughed and laughed at your photos. I always wanted a Barbie as a kid, we had pretend ones as my parents were poor. I enjoyed doing the hair and making clothes for mine, even though they were ill fitting because the size of her boobs.
A couple of years ago a work collegue of my husband was talking about some presents his 3 year old daughter had received for her birthday. One was a Barbie dressed in short shorts, high boots and some sort of top that made him call the doll Hooker Barbie. Not a great image for a 3 year old.

I loved Barbie as a child. i had a balck barbie ( cos my paretns were so P.C ) who was the perfect partner for my Michael Jackson doll. Her cklopthign was the begin of my love of making- i use to make her clothes from fabric scraps and elacstic bands....* sigh*

however I agree she is going to get in her one day... jsut like the friggin ponies. but i prefer her to brats like above comment, they just look too raunchy-m somethign about Barbie is still a little niave and I like that.

But I lvoe your photos and I love your new header I have been meaning to say. xx

I had one as a pre-teen(an original, yes I am that old!) I think little girls should have baby dolls. Barbie is for older girls. That said, neither of my girls were all the interested in Barbie dolls. They were more interested in stuffed animals.
